This is a compilation of poems and short stories revolving around themes such as love, family, and longing. It’s divided into 4 parts; Echoes, Now, Reflections and Tales.

1. First and foremost, I am very new to poems and I was very excited and nervous to start this book. Fortunately, this has been an amazing experience for me. I find that the poems are very touching and I feel like it was written with much care.
2. My favourite poem has got to be Violent Winds! It’s one of those poems that made me pause, think, and read it again because I could relate to it so much.
3. For me, some short stories appeal more than the others. “Amelia” made me teary and it will be one of the stories that I will remember for a long time because it left a big impact on my heart.
4. I would suggest this book to anyone who’s new to poems or if you’re a fan of one.

As an avid reader of short stories and poems, Charissa Ong’s Daylight Dialogues is certainly a book you should have in your short stories collection. I can certainly say that the book contains the best short stories of 2018. The way the idea is constructed, as well as the delivery, shows that the author is exceptional in writing short stories. One example that we can use is from the short story, “THE ANTS AND THE BUTTERFLIES”. This short story echoes the idea of individualism and the detrimental effects of changing yourself just to fit in. It also discusses the notion of blind optimism, which is applicable in today’s society.
The poetry is also a very nice read. The flow and pace are easy to follow, and I can say that it suits the general audience, including those who do not have any prior knowledge regarding poetry. A wonderful example of this is from “BAD APPLE”. The poem describes second chances through the comparison with a bruised fruit. The poem is only two lines, yet the emotion and wisdom that it conveys to the readers are amazing. Overall, the collection of poems and short stories from Daylight Dialogues is very inspirational and I would definitely recommend readers to buy this!
