Poetry & Short Stories – A Practice Book is a motivational and encouraging guide to help writers improve their writing authored by the best-selling author of Midnight Monologues and Daylight Dialogues, Charissa Ong Ty. This book includes exercises and practices that will take you on a step-by-step journey to achieve your writing goals–perfect for writers all around no matter what kind of writing they specialize in.

I’ve mostly covered all the fun exercises in this book and it is really helpful. It can help you set writing goals and challenge yourself to discover paths that you may or may not have tread before. It can really help give you a clear understanding of how you can make your writing and short stories better than before. It helps you visualize more than just the characters and plot but also takes into serious consideration other secondary elements like themes, timeline, environment and the people.

As for poetry, the book will also help you recognize and write lyrical and profound poems, by exploring rhymes, rhythms, meters, cadence and metaphors. Traversing through the poetry prompts will also help you get started and continue your writing journey as a poet.

This book is a great gift for writers who seek to get better in writing and it doesn’t just end there. It can also help you market your book and pitch it to publishers in hopes to land a publishing deal, as well as a few extra helpful suggestions like creating a moodboard, book cover and cover letter to go beyond just a writer to a published author.

The book cover is definitely a showstopper and if I stumble across the book on a shelf of a bookstore, I’d definitely want to pick it up and bring it home. The cover is absolutely gorgeous and the content is complimentary too. Overall, I’d recommend readers and writers both amateur and professional to pick up this book as it is informative and worthwhile.

“Poetry & Short Stories, A Practice Book” takes you by the hand and guides you through writing step by step with factual information, creative suggestions and examples for you to get inspired. It is suitable for aspiring writers or newbies who want to try their hand at writing.

It contains many exercises to improve your skill in short stories and poetry. It felt like a homeschooling experience to me. It is like studying a guidebook that plans out lessons accordingly and the difficulty levels increase as I go, slowly taking me through advanced assignments as I progress. There is useful advice from the perspective of an insider of the writing and publishing industry.

One of the exercises from the Poetry chapter is poetry prompts, you can check out my reels for a sneak peek of that exercise and challenge yourself to write with me!

The book encourages and motivates me to write better and smarter. It is perfect for writers that are overwhelmed with the limitless information online and do not know where to get started without feeling intimidated or confused by the different techniques which all end in feeling stressed and discouraged.

Reading this book will help you explore the reason behind your writing and who you write for. Discovering your passion is an essential ingredient to crafting your piece. To quote Joss Whedon, “Passion rules us all. And we obey. What other choice do we have? Passion is the source of our finest moments.”

You can find the book on their website or in local bookstores like MPH and Popular.

This practice book is divided into two parts: for short stories and poetry. Since both have different approaches in channeling creative ideas, it’s an ideal guide no matter what kind of writer you identify as, even if you’re completely new to it!

Let me share why this is no ordinary practice book and will be such a worthy and fruitful investment:

    Short Stories
    1. It has been organized thoughtfully which will guide your writing journey from the very start of defining your writing’s purpose to the very last step of manuscript preparation.

—I love how the practice book didn’t jump into the process of writing a short story straight away but took some time to invite me to reevaluate the reason for embarking on this path.

—In my opinion, the real highlight is the guide for preparing the manuscript. This isn’t any cheap knowledge you can gain anywhere and the information itself has been told from the perspective of professional publisher.

    2. To me, writing a short story can be somewhat restrictive on creative flow when it comes to technical aspects such as grammar and spelling, but this practice book provides proofreading exercises,

—Thus, it will aid in building your writing’s confidence. I especially adore the explanation where it doesn’t feel intimidating at all but encouraging instead. Indeed, kudos to the author for a good choice of words.

    3. There is a brilliant acronym created regarding the story’s structure, definitely something to look forward to.

—This practice book will help you in emphasization of the story’s elements and depth through the brainstorming process. Not to forget it also provides pages for you to work on sharpening what you’ve learnt, including a 100 words-a-day challenge.

    Poetry
    1. Pouring your heart out through a string of words isn’t enough without the basic knowledge of what a poem is made of and this practice book will equip you with it.

—I learnt a lot about rhyming, rhythm & meters, cadence and figurative language in this practice book. To be honest, I loved to write ‘poems’ back then and was kind of sceptical of the structure as it might affect the creative flow.

—This practice book shed some realization on how important it is to know the foundations of poetry as it will give an impact and leave an unforgettable mark to the readers. Instead of restricting creativity, the structure helps in enhancing the poem itself.

    2. There is a secret to fight against writer’s block and it will surely assist you to keep going.

—It provides you with pages of prompts in one poem-a-day challenge to spark your idea in crafting poems. I found it interesting as it will inspire you to write more.

Overall, ‘Poetry & Short Stories: A Practice Book’ is a perfect guide for those who are keen to write short stories and poems. It surely works as a complete template/blueprint to accompany you along the way of your writing journey.

Organized information and valuable knowledge also serves as a supporter because I felt motivated going through each aspect with the author’s words, cheering for you!

Let me tell you who should pick up this Penwings Practice book: those who want to be writers, those who want to pick up a new hobby and you, who has so many stories to tell and haven’t written anything yet in life! We all have interesting stories to tell if we observe closely using our senses and take a moment to translate them into words. In short, everyone can read the book, pick up a pen and start writing with the guidance provided in this practice book.

The Penwings Practice book is divided into two sections: short stories and poetry. The steps shared in this book covered all crucial areas in writing yet they were not overwhelmingly done.

You will find this book like a compilation of a “writer’s secrets” poured in beautiful pages. Whatever you want to know is here: the foundations, how to draft, how to write an intro and even down to how to design the cover!

There are pages for us to practice day by day and prompts encouraging us to sneak into our mind looking for pieces of memories for ideas and inspiration to write. We can practice proofreading as well as writing our own stories and poetry in this book.

Our experiences differ, our storylines are unique. This book can make you see that you can be a writer if you give yourself a chance. I have written a poem myself! Yay!

  8. Amelia Ramos

I am so happy that I stumbled upon this book as it really helps me in achieving my life-long dream to become a writer! We learned in school how to read and write, and I find myself very passionate about executing my assignments involving reading and writing. I want to explore my creative side, and this book is the best choice in doing so! I have been following Charissa’s work and bought her previous books, Midnight Monologues, and Daylight Dialogues. I can say with confidence that the collection of short stories from the two books are inspirational! I love analyzing the short stories from her books as I can see that she is excellent at writing short stories. Her poetry is also bomb! I am positive many people out there would be lining up to buy her books if they are more aware of it. Her books are so underrated, and deserve the hype that Lang Leav and Rupi Kaur receive!
The prompts and exercises in the book really help me become more motivated in achieving my dream to be a writer, and best believe I’ll be promoting this book to my friends who are also aspiring writers as well! Here’s to hoping that I’ll manage to write short stories and poems as good as Charissa Ong’s one day.
